Course Description

The NRA Basic Pistol Course is an objective-based course, meaning our instructors will be sure everyone in the class fully grasps a concept in its entirety, before moving on to the next area of instruction. We accomplish this through TPI (Total Participant Involvement). Students learn better by DOING, rather than by watching. This is a very interactive course in which students will practice the fundamentals being taught and will participate actively in the class.

The lesson objectives for this course are:

  • Lesson 1: Pistol Knowledge and Safe Gun Handling
  • Lesson 2: Ammunition and the Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting
  • Lesson 3: Firing the First Shots
  • Lesson 4: Scoring Targets, and Selecting and Maintaining Your Pistol
  • Lesson 5: Continued Opportunities for Skill Development

Students who complete this course will receive a NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Certificate. This first half will complete the NRA portion of the course.

Must Have:

Students are required to bring the following supplies with them to class. These are all basic necessities every shooter needs to have in his or her possession, both for your safety while shooting, as well as for maintaining and storing your firearm.

Items with an asterisk beside them are available online. See bottom of page for details.

  • Notebook with stiff backing for taking notes.
  • Pencils or Pens
  • 50 rounds or more of store-bought ammunition.(No handloads and no reloads allowed on our range.) THIS WILL BE USED ON THE RANGE. DO NOT BRING AMMO INTO THE CLASSROOM.
  • .22 Caliber Pistol †
(If you do not have a firearm of your own, you can rent one of ours for $20 at the range. This fee includes ammunition.)
  • Hearing Protection*
  • Eye Protection*

† – A note about caliber:
This is an introductory course to basic pistol shooting. The only weapons we will shoot on the range during this class are .22 caliber. This is both for our instructor’s protection (since they are working with students new to handguns, they have a much better chance of surviving a .22 bullet to the vest, than a .45 caliber bullet to the vest) and for a better shooting experience for you. Students can focus on proper breathing, grip, sight acquisition, and follow through without the problems associated with recoil for their first time on the range.

Shooting Other Calibers:
For a $10 fee, cash only, on range day, instructors will work with students who wish to shoot other calibers on an INDIVIDUAL basis after the official course has been completed. We will occasionally do two students at once, but this depends on the amount of instructors available that day.

Not Sure What To Get?

We realize shooting supplies can be confusing to people not familiar with firearms. Purchasing the wrong merchandise can often damage your firearm, or cause you to have to buy something else because the previous item wasn’t suited to your needs.

To save you money and time, we have compiled a list of items on Amazon that we believe are both cost-effective and that perform satisfactorily for shooters. For example, if you are a veteran shooter, you may already own a great pair of active-electronic hearing protection, but a novice shooter would be tempted to purchase ear-plugs instead or over-spend on items they do not need, not realizing the potential cost savings wasted.

We want shooting to be fun, affordable, and something you can do often. If you do not already have all the shooting supplies you need, we suggest you visit the Range Supplies page for advice on items that are both effective and yet affordable. Where applicable, we have chosen items that qualify for Amazon prime so customers can get free shipping.

Visit the Range Supplies Page for more information.
