Course Description

The NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) program was developed in response to the demand for a nationally-recognized range safety officer certification. NRA Range Safety Officers are people who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations.

The lesson objectives for this course are:

  • Lesson 1: Introduction to the Range Safety Officer Course
  • Lesson 2: Roles of the Range Safety Officer and Range Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Lesson 3: Range Inspection and Range Rules
  • Lesson 4: Range Safety Briefing
  • Lesson 5: Emergency Procedures
  • Lesson 7: Gun stoppages and malfunctions
  • Lesson 8: Range Safety Officer Examination

Students who complete this course will receive a NRA Range Safety Officer Certification, valid in all 50 states.

Certification Requirements

Candidates that wish to become certified Range Safety Officers must:

  • Be 21 or older
  • Attend the entire course.
  • Participate in discussions and practical exercises
  • Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to organize, conduct, and supervise safe shooting activities and range operations.
  • Achieve an examination score of 90% or higher.

Must Have:

Students are required to bring the following supplies with them to class. These are all basic necessities every shooter needs to have in his or her possession, both for your safety while shooting, as well as for maintaining and storing your firearm.

Items with an asterisk beside them are available online. See bottom of page for details.

  • Notebook with stiff backing for taking notes.
  • Pencils or Pens

Not Sure What To Get?

We realize shooting supplies can be confusing to people not familiar with firearms. Purchasing the wrong merchandise can often damage your firearm, or cause you to have to buy something else because the previous item wasn’t suited to your needs.

To save you money and time, we have compiled a list of items on Amazon that we believe are both cost-effective and that perform satisfactorily for shooters. For example, if you are a veteran shooter, you may already own a great pair of active-electronic hearing protection, but a novice shooter would be tempted to purchase ear-plugs instead or over-spend on items they do not need, not realizing the potential cost savings wasted.

We want shooting to be fun, affordable, and something you can do often. If you do not already have all the shooting supplies you need, we suggest you visit the Range Supplies page for advice on items that are both effective and yet affordable. Where applicable, we have chosen items that qualify for Amazon prime so customers can get free shipping.

Visit the Range Supplies Page for more information.

SPECIAL FOR THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA – 50% Discount

boy scouts logoThe 2014 National rule changes for the Boy Scouts of America includes the requirement that there be a Range Safety Officer present with every scout when shooting shotgun. We at S.A.F.T. realize that it’s difficult to get everyone certified, resulting in the boys being able to shoot less, or not at all, depending on the course being held. Any scout master or individual working with the Boy Scouts of America that will volunteer their time to these boys deserves a pat on the back. Bring proof of your affiliation with the BSA to your class and you will receive half off your course.
